You’ve probably heard of osteoporosis – it’s a condition (affecting 3 million people in the UK) where your bones become brittle or fragile and so are more likely to break or fracture. Osteopoenia is where your bone density is lower than normal, but not so low that it is classed as osteoporosis.

As we age, we naturally lose bone density so our bones get weaker, but some people are more at risk than others. Risk factors include:

  • being female (women are more likely to be affected than men);
  • being over the age of 65;
  • having an early menopause;
  • a family history of osteoporosis (particularly if one of your parents had a hip fracture);
  • smoking or heavy alcohol consumption;
  • a sedentary living a sedentary lifestyle and not exercising.

The good news is that you can help your bones to become healthier, and Pippa, one of our regular Pilates teachers (with an interest in low back pain) who is also a Chartered Physiotherapist, brings us this four-week bone health course that is a combination of exercise and useful information – knowledge is power!   Each week, Pippa will show you a combination of weight-bearing exercises and muscle-strengthening exercises to improve balance and posture.  She’ll also be giving advice regarding spine care, plus some general guidance regarding nutrition.   The course will also incorporate the latest guidance issued by the National Osteoporosis Society on physical activity and exercises appropriate for people who have osteoporosis or osteopenia.  

Please wear loose clothing that you can easily move in and footwear suitable for exercise. We will provide all equipment.  

Unfortunately, this course is not suitable if you are frail and/or less able to exercise.
