I heard this story many years ago, I loved it then and I still love it now as it very simply and easily makes us stop and think about our patterns and behaviours. So, here it is:

You see, in our heads we have two minds that are there with us ALL the time.

A wise old man was explaining to his grandson that we all have two wolves in our heads, and these two wolves are constantly battling, they are constantly fighting.

One wolf is full of fear, full of doubt, he is harsh and sees the worst in everyone and every situation, nothing is every good enough (including himself). He judges all and especially himself, life is a struggle at times, he is often low, easy to anger, mean with his time and mean with his possessions. He is always looking, waiting to be attacked, trusting no one, staying close to home where he feels safe, keeping strangers at bay as he sees them as a threat, he is a loner, he is miserable and as time goes on, he becomes cruel and unkind.

The other wolf is full of love and joy, he loves exploring far and wide, he is full of curiosity, he wants to see new things, meet new wolves and all kinds of other animals. He accepts himself and others, he loves being with others and working together. He is calm, generous with his time and possessions, he feels supported and supports, he is trusting and grateful for all he has, he is full of integrity and kindness.

But the two wolves live in the same place and they constantly battle, each one trying to be the top dog – it can be a real battle in there the wise old man tells his grandson.

The grandson upon hearing this says, “But Grandpa, surely the good wolf must win…… Grandpa, tell me which wolf wins??!!”

Quite simple says the old man “whichever wolf you feed”

Which wolf are you feeding today?
